Magic: The Gathering Fallout: A Guide to All Four Commander Decks

Magic: The Gathering – Fallout brought the Wasteland to Magic on March 8, 2024 as a Universes Beyond set (set code PIP). Instead of regular boosters, Fallout launched as four ready-to-play Commander decks plus Collector Boosters, packed with characters from Fallout 3, Fallout 4, Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 76. Each deck has its own three-color game plan, between 37 and 41 cards that are new to Magic, and a strong set of Commander reprints.

Here's a breakdown of every deck, the new mechanics and the rest of the Fallout lineup. Want all four at once? The Fallout Commander Deck Display includes one of each.

What's in each Commander deck

  • A 100-card ready-to-play deck
  • 2 traditional foil legendary creatures, either of which can be your commander
  • 1 foil-etched display commander
  • 10 double-sided tokens
  • 1 Collector Booster Sample Pack with 2 special-treatment cards, at least one rare or mythic rare
  • A deck box, a life wheel and full-art basic lands, five of which show isometric views inspired by the classic Fallout games

New mechanics

  • Rad counters: A new counter that goes on players. At the start of your precombat main phase, you mill a card for each rad counter you have, then lose 1 life and remove a rad counter for each nonland card milled. Some decks hand them out to everyone and profit from the fallout.
  • Junk tokens: Artifact tokens you can sacrifice to dig extra cards off the top of your library, giving long games plenty of fuel.
  • Squad: Pay the squad cost as many times as you like when you cast a creature, and get a token copy of it for each payment.
  • Energy: Returning in the Science! deck, where artifacts generate energy you spend on powerful effects.

Hail, Caesar (Red-White-Black)

Commander: Caesar, Legion's Emperor. Whenever you attack, Caesar lets you sacrifice another creature to make more Soldier tokens, draw cards or deal damage to an opponent based on how many tokens you control. The second commander option is Mr. House, President and CEO, who rewards rolling dice.

How it plays: Build a Legion of tokens, attack every turn and use Squad to multiply your best creatures.

Cards to watch for:

  • Martial Coup: An army of Soldiers, and with X of 5 or more it destroys every other creature too.
  • Skullclamp: Equip it to a token and every time that creature dies you draw two cards.
  • Pitiless Plunderer: A Treasure every time one of your creatures dies.
  • Anguished Unmaking: Exiles any nonland permanent.
  • Assemble the Legion and Ruinous Ultimatum: A growing army and a one-sided board wipe.

Best for: Players who like going wide and attacking every turn. Shop Hail, Caesar

Mutant Menace (Black-Green-Blue)

Commander: The Wise Mothman. The Mothman gives every player rad counters, then grows your creatures with +1/+1 counters as nonland cards get milled. The second commander option is The Master, Transcendent.

How it plays: Irradiate the whole table, mill everyone and turn the fallout into an army of huge, counter-covered mutants.

Cards to watch for:

  • Hardened Scales and Winding Constrictor: Extra +1/+1 counters every time you place them.
  • Tireless Tracker: Makes a Clue every time you play a land and grows as you crack them.
  • Branching Evolution: Doubles the +1/+1 counters on your creatures.
  • Inexorable Tide: Proliferate every time you cast a spell, rad counters included.
  • Casualties of War: Destroys up to five permanents in one shot.

Best for: Players who love +1/+1 counters, proliferate and grinding opponents down. Shop Mutant Menace

Scrappy Survivors (Red-Green-White)

Commander: Dogmeat, Ever Loyal. Dogmeat rewards you for suiting up your creatures with Auras and Equipment and keeps the scrap coming with Junk tokens. The second commander option is Preston Garvey, Minuteman.

How it plays: Load your survivors up with gear, swing with the best-equipped creature on the table and use Junk tokens to keep your hand full.

Cards to watch for:

  • Puresteel Paladin: Draws cards for Equipment and makes equipping free.
  • Rancor: Trample and +2/+0 that comes back to your hand.
  • Champion's Helm and Swiftfoot Boots: Protection for your geared-up threat.
  • Sticky Fingers: A Treasure every time the enchanted creature deals combat damage.
  • Blasphemous Act and Path to Exile: A cheap board wipe and premium removal.

Best for: Players who like Voltron-style decks built around Equipment and Auras. Shop Scrappy Survivors

Science! (Blue-White-Red)

Commander: Dr. Madison Li. Dr. Li gets energy whenever you cast an artifact spell and spends it to power up your artifact creatures and bring artifacts back from the graveyard. The second commander option is Liberty Prime, Recharged.

How it plays: Flood the board with artifacts and Robots, bank energy and outbuild the table.

Cards to watch for:

  • Mystic Forge: Cast artifacts straight off the top of your library.
  • Panharmonicon: Doubles your enters-the-battlefield triggers.
  • Steel Overseer: Grows every artifact creature you control each turn.
  • Thirst for Knowledge: Draws cards and turns spare artifacts into value.
  • Swords to Plowshares and Austere Command: One-mana removal and a flexible board wipe.

Best for: Players who like artifacts, engines and big mechanical finishers. Shop Science!

Fallout Collector Boosters

Fallout Collector Boosters are where the set's flashiest cards live:

  • Showcase Pip-Boy: 26 cards framed as Pip-Boy screens, including all four face commanders and reprints like Tarmogoyf with Fallout names and art.
  • Borderless Vault Boy: 9 cards with Vault Boy art, including Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Crucible of Worlds and Wasteland.
  • Surge foils and extended-art versions of cards from all four decks.
