Pokemon TCG 30th Celebration Elite Trainer Box with booster packs, a Nidorina promo card and Pikachu-illustrated accessories

Pokémon Turns 30: A Collector's Guide to the 30th Celebration

Thirty years ago, on February 27, 1996, Pokémon Red and Green launched in Japan — and nothing in the hobby has been the same since. For 2026, The Pokémon Company is treating the whole year as one long birthday party, and for card collectors it's building to the biggest moment of all: the 30th Celebration expansion. Here's everything you need to know, from the events to the chase cards to which box to grab.

A Year-Long Birthday Party

The celebration kicked off early, with a Pokémon ad featuring Jigglypuff and the 30th anniversary logo airing during Super Bowl LX in February. From there, the anniversary has shown up almost everywhere:

  • Pokémon Day (Feb 27): The Pokémon Day 2026 Collection brought a specially stamped foil Pikachu promo, a 30th anniversary metallic coin and three booster packs.
  • Pokémon GO: A March event put nearly every Gen 1 Pokémon in the wild, and the PokéXciting! city tour is rolling through Asia-Pacific with region-exclusive costumed Pikachu.
  • Retail events: Best Buy hosted Trade & Play events at 225 stores on August 29, and Target ran in-store 30th anniversary celebrations on September 27 with a draw-your-own-card activity.
  • Collabs everywhere: From adidas apparel to Pokémon UNITE adding the legendary birds as playable characters, the logo is on just about everything this year.

The Main Event: Pokémon TCG 30th Celebration

Released September 16, 2026, 30th Celebration is a special set unlike anything the TCG has done before:

  • First-ever simultaneous global release. Japan, North America and everywhere else opened the same set on the same day.
  • Every single card is foil — commons, rares and even Basic Energy. There are no reverse holos and no uncommons.
  • Smaller, stacked packs. Each booster has five foil cards (one is always a Pikachu), plus a foil Basic Energy illustrated by YOSHIROTTEN and a TCG Live code card.
  • Packs ship inside products. Officially, 30th Celebration boosters only come inside collections, tins and boxes — though we also carry single booster packs if you just want to rip one.
  • Big set, big checklist. The English set runs 199 cards: 128 main-set cards (including the 30 Pikachu), 33 secret rares, 30 Classic Collection cards and 8 Basic Energy.
  • Tournament-legal September 30, two weeks after release.

The Chase Cards

The 30 Pikachu. Every pack guarantees one of 30 Pikachu rares, each drawn by a different artist and numbered out of 30. Completing the run is the set's signature challenge — and expect certain illustrations to become more valuable than others, the same way the Van Gogh and Celebrations gold Pikachu did.

The big hits. Early market leaders include the Mew ex Futuristic Rare, the Mew ex and Gengar ex Special Illustration Rares, and the Pikachu ex Special Illustration Rares. Mewtwo ex also gets the Futuristic Rare treatment.

Classic Collection. A 30-card subset of reprints honoring the most iconic cards in the game's history — a nostalgia hit for anyone who started with Base Set.

Tips for Collectors

  • Trade for your Pikachu. With 30 to chase, duplicates are guaranteed. Local trade nights and friends are the fastest way to fill the binder.
  • Let prices settle. Early prices on new sets swing hard. Check recent eBay sold listings before buying or selling singles.
  • Protect those foils. Every card in this set is foil, so sleeve your hits right away — foils scuff easily and curl in humid weather.
  • Mark your calendar. Mini Tins and the Booster Bundle arrive October 2, Battle Decks on October 30, the Ditto Premium, Figure and Ultra-Premium Collections on November 6, and the ex Tins and Binder Collection on December 4.
